YLDA Holds Workshop on Strategic Organizational
Management

The Young Liberals and Democrats of Asia (YLDA) held a Workshop
on Strategic Organizational Management in Singapore on May 21
– 23, 2010. The activity encouraged peer learning
where members shared and addressed the administrative
challenges their organizations face.
The workshop, hosted by Young Democrats of Singapore (YDS), with
the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty, aimed
to equip participants with various organizational management
skills and strengthen their existing capacities.
Workshop topics included secretariat management, risk
and conflict management, organizational accountability and transparency,
networking and public relations, and professional event organizing.
Non-formal methods like role-playing and “table battle”
and lectures from experts of organizational management were employed
in the workshop.
Volunteerism was also discussed at the workshop.
It was emphasized that a clear ideology and the
ability to inspire passion among volunteers are
necessary to achieve a common goal. A balance between
personal and organizational development was also highlighted
as a key to an institution’s holistic efficiency.

Delegates from Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Indonesia,
Hong Kong, Cambodia and Philippines along with some local participants
from the Young Democrats of Singapore and other Singaporean NGOs
attended the workshop. They were asked to make pledges
on how they can further their organizations’ cause.
They set up a Facebook
account where they posted their pledges. The pledges ranged from
a promise to improve one’s self to a more fervent commitment
to the advancement of the pan-Asian network of liberals.
