Young Asian Liberals Discuss Education
at Pakistan Meeting, Elect Filipino to Leadership

Young liberal leaders from all corners of the continent gathered
for the 4th Young Leaders Workshop of the Young
Liberals and Democrats of Asia (YLDA)
in Lahore, Pakistan
from August 9 to 11, 2006 to discuss the current state of education
in the Asian region. The activity was hosted by the Future Youth
Group of Pakistan (FYG) in cooperation with the Friedrich Naumann
Foundation. Flying in from Manila were three delegates
from the Young Liberals of the Philippines
FNF's Resident Representative Dr. Ronald Meinardus joined the
group and co-moderated the workshop.
“The 25 participants took an in-depth look at the various
aspects of educational issues. In the end, they developed a set
of liberal policies."Discussing educational issues
in a multi-cultural and multi-religious setting was an inspiring
and, at times, also challenging intellectual exercise,"
said Dr. Meinardus. Promoting liberal concepts in education is
a central theme of FNF-activities in all parts of the world.
The international workshop coincided with International Youth
Day celebrations on August 12. The Foundation's partner in Pakistan,
the Liberal Forum of Pakistan held a well-attended forum entitled
“The Pakistani Educational System from the Liberal Perspective”.
At the end of this function, YLDA and the liberal Foundation launched
the book, “Young Liberals on the Move”.

The 3rd YLDA Annual General Assembly capped the youth gathering
in Pakistan. The delegates elected Rajendra Mulmi, president of
Youth Initiative-Nepal, as theirpresident. KALIPI Secretary General
Jan-Argy Tolentino was voted in as YLDA Secretary General.
YLDA is a pan-Asian federation of political and NGO youth who
are committed to furthering the cause of liberalism in the region.
It cooperates with the Friedrich Nuamann Foundation.
