Workshop Develops Communication Strategy
In today’s world, political success to a large degree depends
on strategically sound political communication. This, in a nutshell,
was the common perception of the participants of the international
workshop on “Political Communication for Liberal and Democratic
Parties in Asia” that took place in Manila from April 9th
to 12, 2003.
Communications officers and campaign managers from eight liberal
and democratic parties convened in the Philippine capital to discuss
their specific communication practices and ways and means to improve
these. The event was co-sponsored by the Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation
and the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD), the umbrella
organization of eight liberal and democratic parties in Asia.

At the four-day workshop, professional experts presented best practices
of offline and online-communication. “While the participating
parties operate in very diverse environments, there was a common
understanding that strategic communication is essential for political
success”, said Dr. Ronald Meinardus, FNF-Resident Representative
in Manila, who facilitated the workshop together with CALD-Executive
Director John Coronell.
The workshop also discussed recommendations for an effective
CALD-communication strategy. The recommendations will be presented
to the political leadership of CALD for approval at an upcoming
leadership meeting in Sri Lanka in May 2003.
